This is a website published by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom. A very complete and comprehensive site which also includes info on natural disasters among other things. Please note that countries are classified by colour to indicate the countries that are not recommended to travel to.

Of course, USA has its own site for the same purpose. Mexico has a travel alert issued on October 2008 related to violence and they also say our highways are unsafe. Do you think they are right?
